Restored or rehabilitated historic structures for education and public visitation.

Location: Randolph County, AR | Project Date: 2008 - The Rice-Upshaw House became the first phase of a multi-disciplined educational program called REACH (Researching Early Arkansas Cultural Heritage) for Black River Technical College. The project involved historic research, physical fabric investigation, identification and removal of later additions, log restoration and replacement, stone foundation and chimney reconstruction, and adding a new wood shake roof on repaired original hand-hewn rafters. The structure was temporarily lifted 4’ to allow for archeological excavation and foundation repairs, then lowered back to its original elevation. The project received a 2010 Excellence in Preservation through Restoration Award from the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas.
